Tales from Kiss Land

The Album

Kiss Land, released in 2013, represents The Weeknd's first studio album after his immensely popular mixtape collection Trilogy. While Trilogy debuted Abel's dark and melancholy tone, Kiss Land elevated his music to a new, more creative level where he experimented different types of sounds.

The Weeknd's post-fame experiences served as a major inspiration for the album. It emphasises emotions of fear, loneliness, and mistrust. In contrast to his previous work, Kiss Land delves on the anxiety that accompanies success, particularly as he makes his way through a new world full of travel, admirers, and fame. The Weeknd referred to Kiss Land as a frightening and strange location, calling it a "extension of fear," which is reflected in the title alone.

Compared to his previous work, Kiss Land's music is more dramatic and sinister. It creates a unique vibe by fusing R&B with techno and Japanese elements. Songs like "Pretty" and "Belong to the World" are notable for their profound lyrics about betrayal and love, as well as their haunting melodies. Abel frequently uses his tour experiences as a metaphor for the emotional distance he encounters in relationships, and he also sings about feeling cut off from others.

The album's tone is established by the majestic, almost eight-minute long title tune, "Kiss Land." It reflects the sense of uncertainty and instability that accompany celebrity, while some songs, such as Drake's "Live For," have a more positive vibe.

A success?

Kiss Land had a significant impact on The Weeknd's career even if it did not have the same level of economic success as his previous albums which is unfortunate as it deserves much more recognition. It marked his rise from obscure musician to well-known celebrity. Even though Kiss Land is one of Abel's less radio-friendly albums, fans nonetheless enjoy it for its honest and ambitious experimentation. It is still a cult favorite because of its distinct tone and pure emotion.

Kiss Land Fall Tour

The Weeknd’s Kiss Land tour was his first major headlining tour and took place in 2013 to support his debut studio album. The tour marked an important moment in his career, as it was his first chance to showcase his music live on a larger scale after the success of  the Trilogy mixtapes and the release of Kiss Land.
